There’s something about We Were Born In A Flame that makes me want to buy a case of beer and hang out on a porch, inviting people to join me in getting wasted and enjoying the world. Maybe it’s the hippie philosophy of songs like first single "Where Have All The Good People Gone," or maybe it’s the laid-back versions of songs that rock in the live setting, but this is an album to share with friends.

No, Roberts didn’t set out to make a feel-good record and actually, the lyrics are pretty sombre (just check "This Wreck Of A Life" for proof). That said, rockers like "Don’t Walk Away Eileen" and "On The Run" still offer ass-shaking fun. And if the spacious sounds of "Taj Mahal" don’t ensure this album a permanent place in the hearts of longhaired university girls, the political "Canadian Dream" (with its S-O-C-I-A-L-I-S-M hook) will carve it in stone.

While We Were Born In A Flame is hardly the scorcher the title would suggest, it is a solid offering that’s sure to secure a place in the Can-Rock canon.
