Considering J Mascis and Lou Barlow were allegedly sworn enemies for well over a decade, they sure are making up for lost time with the regurgitated Dinosaur Jr. Now a few years into their reunion, Dinosaur have unleashed another slab of guitar-heavy heaviness with Farm, their second album post-coalescent.
Dinosaur Jr. have always been beyond obvious in their output, so Farm unsurprisingly offers some loudness, slurred vocals and a series of Mascis' patented guitar solos that ring out far beyond whatever his bandmates can muster.
That's not to discount Barlow's contributions, but when you're asked to
compete with Mascis' massiveness on the fret board, you really need to
pick your spots. Barlow does that on "Your Weather," which showcases
his own uniquely plaintive vocals and recalls the finest moments of
late 1980s Dinosaur in the process.
