While some of his Barenaked brethren have already ventured into the solo realm, The Vanity Project is a first for BNL frontman Steven Page. This self-titled disc finds Page paired with long-time collaborator and songwriting partner Stephen Duffy (of Tin Tin and Lilac Time.) Some highlights include the BNL-style ballad "Glitterbug" and the Beach Boys flavoured, summer-in-the-sun song, "So. Cal." On most solo ventures, songwriters try to veer in a direction they can't take with their regular band, but for many musicians, it's hard to get away from what they know best — and the Vanity Project are no exception.
