Juxtaposing brutal realism with beautiful fantasy, director Guillermo Del Toro creatively conveys Spain's historical complexities within the straightforward moral universe of fairy tales. In the process, Del Toro crafts a kids' tale that's gruesome enough to make the Grimm brothers look like Robert Munsch. This two-disc set features all kinds of food for thought, including features on fairy-tale mythology, the film's spectacular imagery and the disgusting scene where the dude's cheek gets sliced open.
