Tim Easton @ NXNE 2009

Live Review

Background/ Composition:
Easton is a good friend of Leeroy Stagger (who followed his set). He combines the Americana rock of John Mellencamp with a singer/songwriter swagger and a dose of blues. His latest record, Porcupine, was recently released on New West Records. Easton performed solo on both acoustic and electric, and Stagger's drummer then joined him for a few songs.

Grade: 88

Comment:
You've got to love a guy who sells limited edition vinyl records that feature covers he painted. Easton thanked the Canadian government for allowing him into the country. While he played the bulk of the set alone, his voice and guitar were so strong it made it feel like he was backed by a full band.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Easton had the crowd laughing and had good repartee with audience. His set was spirited enough that a guy sporting a black wife beater shirt (who was too far gone) played the air drums and did a dance like Mr. Roboto in front of the stage. It was elbow to elbow from stage to back bar at Cadillac.

"Young Girls" off Porcupine was one of the highs. The set was too short; the showcase only allowed Easton to tease the crowd with a few of his songs, which left everyone yearning for more.
