Background/ Composition:
In the words of Sarah Harmer, "The Skydiggers are part of the interlocking brick of sound and style that is the foundation of Canada's independent musical landscape." This oft-forgotten — but always beloved — roots-rock fivesome recently celebrated 20 years as a band with the release of a retrospective album.
Grade: 84
Comment:
Woo! Party like it's 1995! If the Skydiggers proved anything on this night, it's that their music is still relevant. It was telling that several of the evening's earlier performers made their way into the crowd to watch this set.
Achievement of Rock 'n' Roll Expectations
80-100: Exceeds skill and knowledge expectations, i.e. rocked us so hard we peed our pants.
70-79: Achieves required skills and knowledge. Meets rock 'n' roll standard.
60-69: Demonstrates some skills. Approaches rock 'n' roll standard.
50-59: Demonstrates some required skills and knowledge in a limited way.
00-50: Has not demonstrated required skills or knowledge.
Learning Skills: E=Excellent, G=Good, S=Satisfactory, N=Sad Really
Oral And Visual Communication
Eye Contact: G
Pronunciation: G
Stage Presence: G
Stage Banter: G
Image: G
Appearance: G
Use Of Stage: G
Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Singer Andy Maize is an intriguing frontman. For most of the set, his banter was nonsensical, but it was the sort of claptrap that compels you to look for hidden meaning. In the night's riskiest move, he used a story about Pearl Jam to introduce a song.
Musical Analysis
Level Of Participation: G
Problem Solving: G
Teamwork: E
Work Habits: E
Organization: E
Audience Participation: G
Sound: G
Composition: E
Songs: E
Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
It's easy to see what Harmer was talking about. These five guys ooze Canadiana from every pore like The Tragically Hip. A few of their songs did seem a little dated, but resurrecting rock history is in right now. The Skydiggers could quite comfortably share a bill with any of today's indie superstars.
Other Skills And Areas Of Interest
Charisma: G
Problem Solving: G
Teamwork: E
Sexiness: S
Haircut: S
Indie Rock Footwear: G
Nods To Disposible Fashion: G
Cool Equipment: G
Level Of Inebriation: E
Actual Ability: E
Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Maize broke out some fascinating dance moves and eventually labeled himself a Solid Gold Dancer. He was especially proud of his pants — a pair of "super duper flare cords" that he's had since grade 10.
