Kids On TV @ NXNE 2009

Live Review
NXNE 2009
Background/ Composition:
Sex-pos indie rave provocateurs.

Grade: 78

Comment:
Kids On TV come from a Toronto scene where bands are as much performance artists as musical presenters. Thought they started slow, the Kids quickly reverted to type — the hyperactive provocative type that got them kicked off of Facebook. Their outlandish costumes and sloppy drunk indie techno built a rickety neon bridge between the rock club and the rave field.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
There isn't nearly enough space here to describe KOTV's costumes, so I'm going to say... rave hippy nativity scene? Neon wigs, psychedelic dashikis, and sparkling facial hair overwhelmed the stage.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
This performance showed a more relaxed KOTV than their confrontational norm. At least, the first half did. after a few jams for the chill out room they dropped the proverbial MDMA and played the sharp-edged, sarcastic, indie glitch rave that widens eyes and furrows brows.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
I later found out that the reason the Kids' set started late and slow was that somebody on the volunteer stage crew accidentally broke the neck off of an extremely expensive bass. It was a major calamity right before the set and the band deserves credit for not only playing the show anyway, but not even mentioning the problem. A group with less integrity would have used the stage to complain.
