- Columbia/Sony BMG
- 3.5 / 5

If Mezmerize was SOAD at their cleanest and catchiest, then Hypnotize is a return to the heavier, grittier sound of their debut. From the thrashy double-bass kicks of opener "Attack," it's clear that things are more serious this time around. The album has a darker tone than its counterpart, and while not as accessible, Hypnotize proves to be the stronger of the two. The main reason for this is frontman Serj Tankian reclaiming his place as lead vocalist, relegating guitarist Daron Malakian to the back-up position to create some truly stunning harmonies. Once you hear the familiar refrain of closer (and extended Mezmerize opener) "Soldier Side," youíll have experienced some of this year's best moments in metal.
