Remember when Cypress Hill's marriage of gunplay and excessive weed
consumption seemed fresh? Now everyone and their homey is a
wacky-tobaccy devotee, with gangstas and backpackers alike pledging
their allegiance to the herb. Meanwhile, Cypress have largely fallen
off the commercial map since their first two records, although their
hardcore fans are among the most dedicated around. Those fans will
likely find this hits package a bittersweet deal. On one hand, the 12
tracks selected — including "Insane In The Brain" and "Latin Lingo" —
truly are a best-of, with little in the way of filler. On the other
hand, why only 12 tracks? This compilation is made up almost
exclusively of songs that hit big on the radio and Cypress enthusiasts
will lament the lack of album material, like "Cock The Hammer," that
would have provided a more comprehensive display of the group's skills.
Unless you've lost your old Cypress records, you can leave this one on
the shelf.
