On Guerolito, Beck's Guero is completely reimagined by a diverse
collection of artists who produce a little something for everyone. Of
course, that means it's not much of a conducive listen, but if you're
making a mix CD for the Beck fan in your life, one or two of these
tracks will do the trick. Particularly, Islands' instrumental
reconstruction of "Que Onda Guero" and Octet's daring instrumentation
on "Girl" (which previously appeared on the special edition of the
record), not to mention Air's outstanding "Heaven Hammer (Missing),"
make this package worth the price of admission for fans. A serious
disappointment, however, is a lack of b-sides, with the sole exception
of the previously released live staple, "Clap Hands." This is even more
troubling when you consider Beck's got a bunch of excellent unreleased
material streaming on his website.
