The latest release in David Usher’s post-Moist, radio-friendly solo career, If God Had Curves is thankfully devoid of sampled opera singers or awkward Tracy Chapman covers. Instead, what we get is a simple pop album, straightforward and definitely still on the Top 40 track. Fortunately, amoung all the hushed sing-speaking and gentle production, which does get a bit same-y, there are a few gems. The power-pop "Love Will Save The Day" may revolve around a cheesy sentiment, but Usher is so enthusiastic it’s hard to sneer at. The melodic, Crowded House-style vocals on "Hope (Tell Everyone)" are sincere, the sing-song march "Hey Kids" is playful and engaging and the ambient and brief closer, "Soldiering," winds the album down perfectly. If there was more of this sonic adventurousness, the LP would be a less sleepy affair.
