Recipe for success or recipe for disaster?
The New Cities' debut was produced by Greig Nori (Sum 41), and mixed by Dave "Rave" Ogilvie, and it has the makings for a pop rock climax. It's six attractive young men singing poppy songs about love and society like an edgier Simple Plan with synths.
"Looks Minus Substance" is the leading dance track on this album and it's definitely one for young scenesters hot for Metro Station and Cobra Starship, and despite the ironic title, this is a standout. The deeper you dive into this LP, the more the oozing tracks like "Leaders Of The Misled" and album single "Dead End Countdown" suck you into their pretentiously poppy prison.
At first listen, the album lacks substance and doesn't possess the grit to stand the test of time, but after a while you can't help but get hooked on the raspy vocals, dirty synths and infectious beats. Throw this on at a house party and you'll be an unlikely hero.
