The Stills — Logic Will Break Your Heart

Music Review
The Stills' Logic Will Break Your Heart

Canadian indie bands have been on a tear lately, rightfully garnering accolades and fans here, south of the border and abroad. Montreal’s Stills have now arrived to raise the bar a little higher with their new album, Logic Will Break Your Heart. Listen to the tension-laden crescendo that punctuates "Of Montreal" or the chiming guitars of "Ready For It" and you’ll hear a dramatic rekindling of Television and Joy Division’s groundbreaking post-punk sound. The Strokes and Interpol mine similar musical territory, but Stills vocalist Tim Fletcher augments his songs with a bittersweet pop croon. The 12 songs here reveal a band that’s cocksure but never cocky, moody but never melodramatic and musically adept. More importantly, they reveal a band with a soul, something that’s lacking too often in today’s cynical, irony-drenched indie rock scene. Believe the hype in this case — there’s nothing stillborn on this full-length debut.
