Matthew Sweet — Time Capsule: The Best Of Matthew Sweet 1990-2000
- Time Capsule: The Best Of Matthew Sweet 1990-2000
- Zomba/BMG
- 3 / 5

Matthew Sweet has always led a charmed life in the eyes of most music critics since the release of his universally cherished album Girlfriend. Since then he has been trying to re-capture this moment of pure power-pop bliss with Altered Beast, 100% Fun, Blue Sky On Mars and In Reverse, unsuccessfully.
Time Capsule, a "greatest tracks" package, smells of contractual obligation (and a quick adios for Mr. Sweet)... but I may be wrong! The album starts well with "Divine Intervention," "I've Been Waiting" and "Girlfriend" but this just recreates the start of Girlfriend. After that things go downhill with only "Sick Of Myself" and "We're The Same" recapturing Sweet's true pop essence. If you like Matthew Sweet, you probably already own Girlfriend. For the rest, Time Capsule will reveal Sweet as a bit of a one trick pony.
