Jarvis Cocker — Further Complications

Music Review
Jarvis Cocker's Further Complications

Middle-aged mope and ex-Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker has a lot to say on his sophomore solo effort, once again tempered with his caustic wordplay and flare for the dramatic.

Cocker hooked up with producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies) for the album and, while the pairing seems a bit incongruous on paper, Albini managed to squeeze out a few new tricks on Further Complications to the benefit of Brit-pop fans everywhere.

This disc takes a bit more of a riff-heavy, glam approach and definitely rocks more than 2006's Jarvis, sounding like T. Rex or early Roxy Music in the process. The amazingly titled "Fuckingsong" is perhaps the best indicator of this new approach, with its ballsy mass of guitars and lyrical profanity.

This is perhaps the most macho work of Cocker's career and, at the absolute worst, is a definite curiosity.
