The press blurbs for Yours Truly, The Commuter suggest Jason Lytle's previous outfit, Grandaddy, suffered a "quiet demise." But that's not exactly true. Lytle was especially vocal about his group's end, and made no secret that Grandaddy were no longer sustainable as more than a one-man band.
Grandaddy were always mostly Lytle's project, so the name change for Yours Truly doesn't mean a great deal — at least on disc. The differences will start to emerge if Lytle takes his solo show on the road. This album houses more acoustic guitar than Lytle's previous creations, but it's also awash with multiple layers of synthesizer and a flurry of other unidentified instruments. It'll be a challenge for one man to reproduce.
Those who hold up 2000's The Sophtware Slump as the pinnacle creation in the Grandaddy catalogue shouldn't be disappointed with Yours Truly, The Commuter. It doesn't contain the same big picture imagery, but, taken individually, these songs form a solid collection that ranges from eerie meandering to blissed-out rock.
Lytle's solo career is off to a good start.
