Canada's own super-group is back with an album that doesn’t just pick up where their first, Mass Romantic, left off, but turns it into a more complex and arguably more satisfying beast. Neko Case, Carl Newman and Dan Bejar, the vocal Pornographers, sing their hearts out on Electric Version (sometimes alone, sometimes together in what has become their signature group singing sound).
Electric Version kicks off with the title track and "From Blown Speakers," a song to rival previous singles "Letter To An Occupant" and "My Slow Descent Into Alcoholism" for hooks. But it’s not until the middle of the record — "All For Swinging You Around" and vThe New Face Of Zero And One" — that things hit their pinnacle. While for many The Pornographers are just another excuse to enjoy Case’s sultry voice, Electric Version ensures that Newman, Bejar and the rest of the boys get their well-deserved due.
With witty and catchy lyrics and tunes that are more complex this time out, but still instantly hummable and summery, Electric Version is the album you wish you wrote.
