It’s been three long years, but The Roots finally return with their follow-up to 1999’s Things Fall Apart. Phrenology contains more of the conscious lyrics and organic beats that fans have come to expect from the Philly originators. Musically, The Roots have always been ahead of their game and their latest LP is no exception. What other hip-hop group could pull off a blistering punk number ("!!!!!!!") and then shift seamlessly back into a slick groove ("Sacrifice") without missing a beat? Or better yet, who would expect that the latter’s cameo from Nelly would mean Furtado and not the St. Lunatic? Guests Talib Kweli and Jill Scott also make memorable contributions to a well-rounded and progressive album. Once again, The Roots demonstrate the heights that hip-hop can achieve when it comes from the heart, not the ego.
