Joni Mitchell’s fragile voice and sweet, pure lyrics are the centre points of her work. Usually, it’s just her and the acoustic guitar, the perfect less-is-more sound. However, every so often, more can be magical, especially on Travelogue, a two-disc gem that captures Mitchell’s unparalleled presence with a full orchestra. The results are songs that sound full but simultaneously tender enough that you run the risk of being engulfed in the emotion of her work. It’s not for everyone, but fans will undoubtedly adore Travelogue. The re-interpretations of the classics, may, however, enrage purists, but you really can’t fault a voice like that.
