After the intensity of Black Mountain's last album and the subsequent
shows the band performed in support of it, it's easy to see how
Outside Love came to fruition.
Stephen McBean's stoner-country anthems feel like campfire jams. The
vibe is carried further by McBean's lyrics on "Holiday"
("Everyone I love deserves a holiday in the sun") and "And I Thank You"
("I'm in love with all the others").
Like most of McBean's projects, he invited a litany of friends to
help out, including members of Black Mountain, Jesse Sykes and Immaculate
Machiner and New Pornagrapher Kathryn Calder. Their presence is most
felt on rousing singalongs on "The Gayest Of Sunbeams" and
"Execution."
The latter tune is hands-down the catchiest thing McBean has written, and
Outside Love may be the best thing he's done.
