There are a couple of things that were going through my head as I listened to the new Northern Pikes album:
1.) When was this album made?
2.) If they released it under another name would I have cared?
3.) Aw, there's that old Canadian sound. I've missed it!
It's true this brand new album (from a band that was otherwise defunct) is a keeper. And it does stand on its own too. The all-too-familiar Pikes sound (the one that you can hear on radio replay due to the Canadian content laws) is back and clear as an icicle on a rainy January day in Anytown, Canada.
Musically, these guys have kept the creative juices flowing over the past eight years with solo projects and other stuff. It comes across as mature, but they're still interested in making their original sound shine through. Comebacks tend to be unoriginal and contrived, yet this one is purely enjoyable, name left unsaid.
