The long-awaited follow-up to Michel’s 2001 album In The Belly Of The Whale is an experiment in eclecticism. The album’s opening track and first single is "Perfect." Literally. It is the ultimately catchy, well-crafted and perfect pop song. However, the album travels all over the map, from the Hawksley Workman-esque bounce-and-snap of "In Your Arms," to the country-twanged character study of "When I Get Out," to the driving, disco-influenced beat of "Full Effect." Lyrically, Michel alternates between storytelling and reflection. Most entertaining lyrics come with "Two Hearts," an homage to 1970s kitsch culture. This isn't the most unified album, but it delivers the goods.
