To be disgustingly honest, a few years ago I would have rather sawed off my left nut than listen to a Barenaked Ladies album. I can admit there's been a few times, immediately prior to or during copulation, when I've let their stereo presence slide, but to genuinely enjoy the music, I don't think so. My conclusion of Maroon, you ask? After weeks of questioning my age, sexuality and masculinity, I like it.
Maroon is a surprisingly talented and mature effort. The CD's 13 tracks (1 hidden) successfully radiate what is undoubtedly BNL's most valuable asset: energy. Songs like "To Little Too Late," "Never Do Anything" and "Humour Of The Situation" represent the classic BNL style - silly, happy and annoyingly catchy. But for those of us who aren't members of the BNL fan club, "Helicopters," "Falling For The First Time" and the album's first single, "Pinch Me," all offer a more laid back and less ego-offensive feel for our toe-tapping pleasure. Maroon isn't just the colour I turned after admitting that I liked the Barenaked Ladies, it's also an enjoyable listen.
