What's that line about flogging a dead horse?
The "Misfits" (bassist/singer Jerry Only with whoever will stay around long enough to record an album) can only be taken one way at this point: as a bad joke that just keeps going. This installment of the gag finds them recording classic '50s pop tunes such as Del Shannon's "Runaway" and Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls Of Fire."
Overall, the songs are well done and Only's voice is rich, but the entire idea is just goofy, especially considering that this was once a band once responsible for dark, angry, fuck-the-system tunes with a horror movie undertow. Now they spew out pointless filler instead of working on their own album proper. What's worse is the stupid booklet complete with music lesson!
Given the choice between these mildly aggressive covers and a passionate effort such as Walk Among Us... well, the choice is obvious. Welcome to another kitschy dust collector.
