Andrew Hunter @ CMW 2009

Live Review
Background / Composition:
This Halifax based songwriter normally plays with a two-piece backing band called The Gatherers and is the winner of his station's regional radio star competition. He was originally born in New Brunswick, but spent most of his life split living in Maui, Hawaii and Nova Scotia.

Grade: 67

Comment:
Hunter normally plays up-tempo radio rock, but played an acoustic set at this Music Nova Scotia showcase. He was accompanied only by drummer Mat Budeski, who mostly stood around with a shaker.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
It's a bit hard to mark a performer over a three-song set. Hunter had to contend with a room full of people chowing down on fresh scallops, smoked salmon and lobster sandwiches generously provided by Music Nova Scotia. He did a good job engaging the audience, and spent some time plugging some free samples on disc, which were available at the front of the stage.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Hunter's songs are strong, and they're catchy, but he looked a little bit out of his milieu. One got the feeling that he wanted to be rocking out instead of standing there trying to look soulful with an acoustic guitar.

Strengths/Weaknesses/Next Step:
Hunter wore a black castro hat, a leather jacket, baggy pants and Adidas shoes. Budeski was similarly attired. This made them look like they were east coasters with a penchant for late '90s Can-rock. If you go to his MySpace, that's exactly what you'll hear.
