Let It Come Down may be the most effective religious record ever recorded. But it's not because of some cloying love-the-Lord imagery and such, it's because the trials and tribulations of our anti-hero J Spaceman are laid out with more frightening lows and soaring highs than on any previous Spiritualized release. The overwhelmingly self-indulgent aspects of the record — huge gospel choirs, string and horn flourishes — all work because the vision is so shamelessly grandiose. There's a lull through the mid-part of the album, but it's more about vision than execution at this point anyway, so all sins are forgivable. And by the time you get to the trio of "Stop Your Cryin'," "You Won't Get To Heaven (In The State I'm In)" and "Lord Can You Hear Me," you're too caught up in redeeming your soul to worry about the small stuff.
