It's been a long time coming for Built To Spill. Far too long. You In Reverse comes after nearly a half-decade absence, during which lead singer Doug Martsch released a solo record and the band toured sporadically. You In Reverse's opener, "Goin' Against Your Mind," would suggest they're back with something to prove. The eight-minute-plus rocker goes pretty much everywhere the band didn't on Ancient Melodies Of The Future, but it's a bit of a drag because nothing else on the record lives up to it. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing inherently wrong with the rest of the album. Overall, it's extremely listenable. It's just that you shouldn't start with the epic and then expect to hold the audience's interest through mid-tempo track after mid-tempo track, with only a couple exceptions.
