Some things in life really shouldn't be done, and remixing Johnny Cash is one of them. I'm not sure what prompted John Carter Cash, Johnny Cash's son, to become involved with this project. Nonetheless, Carter Cash executive-produced this record along with Snoop Dogg and Beyonce's dad, Matthew Knowles. When I first listened to this album, nearly every track offended me. On second listen, I found the Philip Steir remix of "Get Rhythm" and Pete Rock's remix of "Folsom Prison Blues" somewhat palatable. While there are some OK remixes here, the horrible outweighs the good by a long shot. The Sonny J remix of "Country Boy" is a terribly confused affair, while the Kennedy remix of "Sugartime" sounds even more mixed up. It's a god-awful combination of Cash, Joan Jett and a hip-hop beat. The absolute worst of the bunch is Alabama 3's remix of "Leave That Junk Alone." While I respect Carter Cash, I find myself wondering why on earth somebody green-lighted this record. While many Johnny Cash songs describe actual train wrecks, this is a metaphorical one of gigantic proportions.
