While it bears the A.C. Newman name, Carl Newman's second solo effort has disappointingly yielded another New Pornographers album. The Pornos' frontman's music may always show hints of that band, but where 2004's The Slow Wonder solo debut took steps to diversify his sound, Get Guilty's tracks could easily fit anywhere in the Vancouver band's catalogue. That's not to say Get Guilty is bad, it's just more of the same, replete with female backing vocals and that familiar New Pornographers sound. There are a handful of standout tracks, including opener "There Are Maybe Ten Or Twelve...," "The Changeling (Get Guilty)," "All Of My Days And All Of My Days Off" and the refreshingly upbeat "Like A Hitman, Like A Dancer." But most of Get Guilty's songs merely hover inoffensively in the background.
