Belle And Sebastian — Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant

Music Review
Belle And Sebastian's Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant

Even though they were name-dropped in the John Cusack film High Fidelity, Belle And Sebastian haven't opted to pursue mainstream success. Instead they continue to create intense, emotional, inspiring and cantankerous music.

Not since Morrissey have someone's lyrics — in this case Stuart Murdoch's — been so heavily weighed and evaluated by a devoted cult following. The debate of whether Elvis is a cat or the MIA star on "A Century Of Elvis" from the EP Lazy Line Painter is the equivalent of Sloan fans arguing "Whose more shagable, Jay or Chris?" Albeit it's more arty and intelligent than the Sloan debate, which ensures that Belle And Sebastian continue to be strictly for grown-ups or the cute-geeky-girl in English class who enjoys reading poetry.

Music geeks will spend hours obsessing over their pop songs ("Nice Day For Sulk," "Woman's Realm") that are in the same vein as The Velvet Underground's Loaded. Like early REM or Smiths, Belle And Sebastian have created another timeless masterpiece that can only be compared to the rest of their catalogue.
