It's a shame that Kimya Dawson's biggest claim to fame is her involvement with the Moldy Peaches, because that project's gross-out novelty betrays the fact that Dawson is a very capable songwriter. Like too many artists associated with the anti-folk movement, Dawson's music has a cutesy quality that can only be described as childlike, but unlike her former partner, Adam Green, Dawson's sound is charming rather than cloying. Plus, the stories on this album — which deal with both darkness and innocence — are extremely compelling. Dawson's uncomplicated delivery drives her lyrics to the forefront, making this album a surprisingly arresting listen from top to bottom.
