Sex Pistols — There'll Always Be An England

DVD Review
It's kind of hard to believe there's never been an official Sex Pistols live DVD. Nonetheless, this fills that void. There'll Always Be An England was directed and shot by Julien Temple, who directed The Great Rock And Roll Swindle. The DVD, which features the original Sex Pistols lineup of singer John Lydon (better known as Johnny Rotten), guitarist Steve Jones, bassist Glen Matlock and drummer Paul Cook, is split into two parts. The first is a live concert shot last year at London, England's Brixton Academy. It's largely unremarkable, save for a few ridiculous comments from Lydon (about how fat and old he is), who mocks the audience throughout. But what's far more interesting are the extra features, which actually make the DVD worth watching. The camera follows the Pistols around London as they show off where they played their first gigs, where they used to get into trouble and the houses where they grew up. There's also a nearly 40-minute feature that follows Lydon on a double-decker bus ride, and hilarity ensues as he critiques modern British architecture and yuppies, and launches into some pretty colourful rants. Ironically, since the 90-minute extra features are longer than the concert itself, There'll Always Be An England would have been better if the show had been nixed.
