I think it came as a surprise to everybody when Josh Homme's funny-for-a-little-while, but-please-go-back-to-QOTSA side project Eagles Of Death Metal released
Death By Sexy, a legitimately great follow-up to their monotonous debut. This was solely due to the fact that frontman Jesse Hughes decided to write actual songs with irresistible hooks instead of a few repetitive riffs with humorous vocals on top of them.
Heart On continues this trend, and most will be shocked to find a lack of bombastic, sexually-charged rock songs on the record. This would be a shame if the slower tunes weren't the highlights. Pseudo-ballad "Now I'm A Fool" might be one of the catchiest jams of the year, and the slow boogie of "High Voltage" beats the caffeine high of "Cherry Cola" any day of the week. The album is a bit top-heavy, with a few filler tunes coming in towards the end, but the bangers certainly bang hard enough to compensate. As Hughes is sure to boast, let's hope the Eagles keep this
Heart On up for a long time coming.
