Bob Dylan's Jesus Years

DVD Review
In the late '70s, Bob Dylan shocked many of his fans by converting to Christianity. He would release two albums of non-secular music, 1979's Slow Train Coming and 1980's Saved. This DVD documents Dylan's "Jesus Years." Its production quality leaves a lot to be desired, since it features cheesy graphics throughout, and at times the sound levels are uneven. Nonetheless, the DVD features some pretty important interviews. Director/producer Joel Gilbert spoke to: Jerry Wexler, who produced Slow Train Coming and Saved; Dylan's Bible class teacher Bill Dwyer; songwriter Al Kasha; Regina McCrary, one of Dylan's back-up singers; Mitch Glaser, of the controversial Jews For Jesus group, and many others. Unfortunately, it's nothing but interview after interview, which means it's entirely boring and it gets tiring after about half an hour. Dylan's Jesus years aren't very understood, even by hardcore Dylan fans, and while this DVD is a good opportunity to get into the subject at length, Gilbert has taken a potentially interesting subject and turned it into a boring film of almost nothing but dry talking heads, which is unfortunate.
