The hip kids may not know that in addition to being a member of Holy Fuck, Brian Borcherdt is a solo artist. Coyotes is his latest solo album, and while it's certainly interesting to see a side of Borcherdt that doesn't involve weird blips and bloops, distorted vocals and shredding tape in a machine, the album isn't as strong as it could be. It's a near 180 from the music of Holy Fuck, since it features Borcherdt mostly unaccompanied on acoustic guitar with some strings or piano added here and there. There's a haunting feel to the tracks, but save for "Means Of Escape," Borcherdt's voice barely rises above a whisper. That means these tracks unfortunately never really go anywhere and end up all sounding the same. Borcherdt's also been a member of By Divine Right, Burnt Black and many other bands, so it's interesting to see he's got many faces, but that this album fails to stick makes it more of a curiousity than anything else.
