The Ride Theory got a fresh start when they changed their name to Young Rival last year, and now the Hamilton, Ont. garage rock quartet are ready to properly break out. Their self-titled, independently released debut EP, which was produced by Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Antony And The Johnsons) in New York, is practically oozing its '60s and '70s influences. The album opens with the jangly and poppy "Your Island" and flows into a heavy Brit-inspired sound on "Poisonous Moves" and the excellent "Another Nobody." Young Rival then delve into a darker psychedelic tone with "Too Hip" and "The Haunt." While it's nothing new in terms of sound, Young Rival have made it their own.
