Toronto's MSTRKRFT are the best thing to happen to Canadian dance music in decades, which is why it's so unfortunate that their much-anticipated debut doesn't pack the punch we've been waiting for. With The Looks, producer Al-P and Death From Above 1979's Jesse F. Keeler have made a house record strictly for dancefloors and little else. No song reaches the '80s robotic glory of "Easy Love," though sexed-up handclap-fest "She's Good For Business" comes close, while "Neon Knights" is one of many tracks that can easily be compared to classic Daft Punk. There's nothing new musically on this record of electro-bass and hammering beats, but sometimes albums, like this one, don't need to be anything more.
