With Watch Your Candles, Hamilton's Marble Index have maintained the revved-up mod rock 'n' roll sound that dominated their debut album, but the band have tempered their manic energy and slowed things down just enough so that both they and the listener can breathe a little. The group explore a few new textures (where mod walks, hints of ska are sure to follow) and have gained a certain sense of focus, but there was something to be said for that now missing sense of urgency. Still, while this disc may be less brash and snotty, it's a strong effort and an indication that The Marble Index are ready to grow, slowly but surely.
