Land Of Talk — Some Are Lakes

Land Of Talk have been generating a lot of talk lately. The Montreal indie rock trio finally finished touring in support of their 2006 Applause Cheer Boo Hiss EP, which included dates in Europe with Tapes 'N Tapes and Retribution Gospel Choir, and singer/guitarist Elizabeth Powell made guest appearances on Brendan Canning and Karkwa's latest albums. Now, on the brink of the release of their full-length debut, which was produced by bon Iver, Land Of Talk have been snatched up by Saddle Creek and will tour with Broken Social Scene in October. Some Are Lakes stands up to the hype. Powell's voice is reminiscent of an early Sarah Harmer, with an airy yet gritty quality that lets her vocals float along the melody ("Death By Fire") or cut to the core in the chorus ("Corner Phone"). There's a raw yet charming quality — especially on "The Man Who Breaks Things (Dark Shuffle)," "Young Bridge" and the poppy title track — that will undoubtedly draw you in.
