While Jim Cuddy is the more steadfast, straightforward country-rock half of the Blue Rodeo songwriting duo, Greg Keelor is the wild child, more prone to raucous psychedelia and mournful blues when left to his own devices. Aphrodite Rose is a bit of an anachronism with its '60s-inspired sound. "Steal Your Mind" and "Colour And Rhyme" could be B-sides from a Byrds record. Then there's the MC5-esque howl and yowl of "Prisoner." There's also the haunting, swirling blues and instrumental tracks that are reminiscent of Keelor's work with The Unintended. Keelor's vocals throughout are deeply warm and understated. Whether he's crooning or yelling, it's a powerful experience. Aphrodite Rose is a perfect blend of country and folk Blue Rodeo are famous for, and Keelor's avant-garde, retro tendencies are heartrending and beautiful.
