There are few bands with the ability to sweep up a roomful of people the way Toronto's Ohbijou can. The thoughtful lyrics and angelic voice of Casey Mecija are always mesmerizing live, and they're bolstered by subtle and unique instrumentation by great players. On the band's debut full-length, all of these elements are married exquisitely to create a dreamy, inspiring record full of singular soundscapes. The gently strummed guitar of "The Otherside" gives way to a succession of strings, drums and keys that only part for Mecija's introspective vocals. "Favorite Skin" is another even-paced song that shifts into a higher emotional gear thanks to a collective effort. "Steep" was a hit of sorts in demo form, but sounds all the better for the slicker version included here. Live favourite "The Woods" is mischievous and mysterious. Fragile yet strong, Ohbijou ache with ingenuity.
