"This is for the
ladies," The Johnstones proclaim on their debut full-length. But the
Ajax, Ontario quintet also have something to offer the boys. Word Is
Bond is a blistering set of ska- and punk-fuelled mayhem that has a
smattering of hip-hop thrown in for good measure. The lyrics, focusing
on girls and good times, are a bit juvenile, yet they, like the music,
are delivered at breakneck speeds and admirably capture the energy of a
live ska show. Standout tracks include the anthemic "L.A.D.I.E.S" and
the funk-infused "G7C7." Tougher to digest, however, is the
self-indulgent seven-minute rap track, "No Song Here… Must Be A
Mistake," and the unnecessary second version of "L.A.D.I.E.S." Still,
this energizing release is worthy of a spin.
