Serena
Ryder easily possesses one of the five best voices in Canadian music
right now. It's just taken her some time to grow into it. Her rich,
throaty, powerful tones seemed incongruous in her teens. Now, in her
twenties, she's truly fulfilling her promise. This creative collection
of uniquely interpreted covers showcases not only her vocal range, but
also her arranging skills. The corny "Good Morning Starshine" is given
a viable new spin, as are tunes by The Band, Count Basie and Leonard
Cohen. Using shades of rock, jazz and world beats, Ryder makes these
songs her own, to the point where her three original tunes blend
seamlessly with the covers. This is an excellent dress rehearsal before
Ryder's upcoming original studio album that will likely raise her above
the indie folk underground and into the spotlight.
