By now you
already know what to expect from The Mountain Goats — minimalist
production, hushed songs and soul-baring lyrics. Even 14 albums in 11
years can't get these guys to try something dramatically different, but
frontman John Darnielle does "tortured indie rocker" so well that we
can forgive him for his lack of adventure. Still, Darnielle needed to
do something interesting to follow last years' The Sunset Tree, a
moving record about living with an abusive father. Get Lonely isn't
nearly as in-your-face as their previous disc, but the Californian
group still deal with an emotional topic, albeit a more universal one —
a break-up. The lyric "When I got home I thought about you/Like a
desperate police man searching for clues" on "In The Hidden Places"
only begins to unravel Darnielle's complex inner thoughts.
