Incubus have
always been slagged by critics for their mainstream appeal, but their
detractors often overlook the band's consistent level of
experimentation and musical ingenuity. On their sixth album, however,
the SoCal quintet have proven the critics right with their most
commercially accessible album yet. On its better songs,
Light Grenades
mixes
A Crow Left Of The Murder's spastic moments with
Make Yourself's
hard rockin' approach, making "A Kiss To Send Us Off" and the excellent
title track the band's most energetic work in years. Sadly, there are
twice as many sappy ballads as there were on
Crow, and slow jams such
as "Love Hurts" stop the record dead in its tracks.
Light Grenades will
please those only familiar with Incubus' singles. Longtime fans are
sure to be disappointed.
