The Hasidic
reggae-rap artist has easily outgrown his initial curiosity appeal and
proven that he's much more than a novelty act. The man born Matthew
Miller proves his stature on the seven-song CD component of this
package through the use of production and mixing heavyweights Sly &
Robbie, Bill Laswell and Ad-Rock. "Jerusalem (Out Of Darkness Comes
Light)" is an excellent reggae-based pop song that also comes in an
alternate mix, while the artist goes for more of a roots approach on
"Warrior." There's a pretty faithful but more reggaefied cover of The
Police classic "Message In A Bottle" that features some additional
toasted lyrics in the bridge. The track also comes in a dub version.
The accompanying 90-minute Live In Israel DVD showcases Matisyahu's
engrossing stage presence during a concert shot in Tel Aviv.
