The problem with most
young punk bands is that they don't take breaks from being upbeat, and
a constant feel-good vibe starts to sound unbearably irritating after a
while. Crush Luther seem to understand this, and they focus on building
solid grooves instead of annoying party anthems. The Toronto quintet's
debut is much more suited to post-party chill-out sessions, and
thankfully lacks any hacky-sacking stoner tendencies. Even poppier
tracks, like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones-ish swinger "Don't Fight About
It," keep their cool thanks to frontman Luther Mallory's smooth croon.
The group also know when to rock out, but steer clear of any pop-punk
pitfalls. If The Salads and IllScarlett are too unsophisticated for
your tastes, give Crush Luther a spin.
