Girls Rock!

Movie Review
Girls Rock!
In a world where girls are still, on some level, taught to be pretty, amiable, quiet and even subservient, rock 'n' roll camp offers a place where they can leave those societal pressures behind and learn to be themselves through the healing powers of rock music. For a week each summer, girls ranging in age from eight to 18 come together to form bands, write songs and perform in front of hundreds of people at a concert. Over the course of the week, the girls learn far more than how to play instruments. With lessons in conflict resolution, self-defence and even the acceptability of sweat and not looking like a princess all the time, the camp provides the girls with a well-rounded, empowering and generally awesome experience.

Following a handful of participants, Girls Rock! gives the viewer a firsthand look at the camp's 2005 events. Filled with funky graphics, a killer girl rock soundtrack and alarming quotes about young girls and self-esteem, Girls Rock! is a fun, powerful and extremely relevant film. This should be required viewing for any girl — and any woman who's ever been a girl.
