Combining the obscurity of Do
Make Say Think with the dour nature of mid-period Sebadoh, The Slip
continue to fly the flag for math rock fans everywhere. On Eisenhower,
the Boston-based trio twiddle and twaddle their way through 11 tracks,
demonstrating their considerable chops and attention to detail. Yet,
unlike most math rockers, The Slip actually like to inject vocals into
the mix, and this leads us to believe that they've matured beyond their
slide rules and scientific calculators. In fact, the plodding tempos of
"Even Rats" and "Airplane/Primitive" recall Modest Mouse, Built To
Spill and other indie rock heroes of the day. By the second half,
Eisenhower is a surprisingly accessible work for music fans of all
shapes and sizes.
