There's
something oddly familiar about the sounds put forth by Montreal's Kill
The Lights. Closely approximating the music played and produced by
fellow Canuck rockers The Diableros, The Dears and Pilot Speed, KTL use
a vaguely British sensibility mixed with longing vocals to create
decent but not entirely original music. On
Buffalo Of Love, you really
have to look no further than vocalist Alex Hackett for proof of this.
He croons and emotes the hell out of his lyrics and, while a decent
enough singer, the drama is a bit tough to stomach at times. In terms
of the musicianship, it's sturdy on a number of levels, especially for
those predisposed to dramatic indie guitar wankery. Lots of
well-planned dynamics are at work here, and while "Arctic, At Dawn" and
"Bombs" might sound a bit too self-important for some, the tunes are
short enough that they don't entirely collapse beneath the weight of
their considerable ambitions.
